Soranos of Ephesus

  • One of the most important physicians of antiquity
  • He was born in Ephesus; the son of Menandrus and Karian Phoebe, probably in the 2nd half of the first century A.D
  • He studied in Alexandria and moved to Rome where he practiced medicine
  • He wrote about 20 books
  • "Soranos' Gynecology" is consisted of 4 books. These books are addressed not only to physicians but also to midwives and non medical people
  • He was citing the Hippocratic oath, rejecting all induced abortions
  • Soranos prefered contraception, as safer, to the distruction of the embryo
